Jailed Man City youngster Meppen-Walter to appear on TV show about ... - Daily Mail

A Manchester City starlet who was jailed for causing a crash that killed a sister and a brother will appear in a TV show tonight about the dangers facing young drivers.

Courtney Meppen-Walter, 18, was given an 16-month sentence in February after he admitted two counts of causing death by careless driving.

His Mercedes was travelling at almost twice the 30mph speed limit when it ploughed into a family's Nissan Micra, in Manchester.

The crash, last September, killed father-of-two Kulwant Singh, 32, from Salford, and his sister Ravel Kaur, 37, from Manchester.

Ravel Kaur's two sons, Amjit, 17, and Harveen, 16, who were in back of the Micra were seriously injured but have since made a good recovery.

Meppen-Walter was interviewed for the BBC3 show Licence to Kill, which examines the high mortality and injury rate of young drivers.

Presenter Sophie Morgan, who was left in a wheelchair following a crash, said an overhaul of the driving test was needed to prevent more accidents.

'Clearly something needs to be looked at and one of the questions I've been thinking about and asking is whether the driving test is fit for purpose really.'

Manchester Crown Court heard how Meppen-Walter, who's captained the England under-18 team, and a pal in a VW Golf were spotted driving in an 'erratic' fashion.

It also emerged that Meppen-Walter had been given a speeding conviction just six months before the fatal crash and his solicitor admitted the player's 'lack of driving experience' had been a significant factor.

But Jailing Meppen-Walter for 16 months and handing him a three year driving ban, judge Martin Steiger QC said he was satisfied the defendant's speeding was 'not an isolated act' but an 'overall feature' of his driving.
